For people who have been convicted of driving offences it can be difficult to get insurance cover. At Crosby Insurance we believe that if you have served your time and your conviction is spent then you should not be further punished. With our motor insurance for convicted drivers we can give you the best possible deal to make sure you get the cover you need that has been specifically tailored to your requirements.
Why do you need specific cover?
The simple reason you need cover specifically for you is that insurers tend to be nervous of giving people with convictions insurance. The reason that finding cheap motor insurance for convicted drivers is hard is because they are statistically more likely to get involved in an accident, making them a higher risk than someone who has not been convicted of a crime.
This means you can often find it difficult to get cover due to the fear of the client potentially reoffending and the increased likelihood of being involved in an accident (especially if the conviction was for dangerous driving). Some providers may offer coverage for people who have convictions that have nothing to do with driving offences such as theft, burglary or arson (although this is likely to be provided by a specialist and this can often be very expensive). This offers no reassurance if you are someone who has been convicted of a driving offence such as speeding or dangerous driving.
What is a spent conviction?
A spent conviction is one that can in effect be ignored after a certain length of time (this will depend on the type of conviction and the length of the sentence).
For example if you were sent to prison for six months or less then the conviction would be considered spent after around seven years while for a fine or a community service these will usually thought of as spent after around five.
If your sentence includes prison time of two years or more then this is never considered as a “spent” conviction and you are always legally obliged to declare it on any forms.
Don’t hide it
It cannot be emphasised enough that you must declare any convictions you have had. Failure to do so will result in your policy being declared invalid and this in turn means that any claims you make will be refused.
It is also worth remembering that if you wish to drive you are legally required to get coverage. Driving without insurance is illegal and will add to your convictions, thus making it even harder to get coverage later on.
Fortunately Crosby Insurance will cover any driving convictions regardless of whether or not they are spent* and any spent criminal convictions.
While it may be more expensive than standard cover it is still possible to find cheap insurance for convicted drivers.
Ways you can reduce your premiums include-
- Pay a higher excess- remember to budget carefully so you can be certain that you can afford the repairs should you be involved in a crash. This will give you lower premiums in the long term.
- Don’t drive as much- Lower mileage reduces the risk of having an accident, therefore it is worth driving less if possible to save money on your policy.
- Make your vehicle more secure- Fitting your vehicle with an immobilizer or keeping it in a garage as opposed to an open parking space will reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen and this will be reflected in the reduction of your insurance premiums.
- Telemetric aka black box insurance- This is when a driver agrees to their driving habits getting tracked by their insurer. This allows for a more accurate reading of how someone drives and so tends to result in a fairer assessment of their potential risk and often means lower premiums than if the policy was calculated in theory (this is why it tends to be popular with younger drivers who are looking to save money on their first policies).
